The BMW X3 returns for the 2025 model year with a dramatic refresh in its fourth generation, including two powertrain options for the North American market. Both available engines have also been upgraded with 48-volt mild-hybrid battery technology for enhanced performance and efficiency.

The fourth generation is the sportiest X3 ever

You might be mistaken in assuming that the addition of hybrid technology on all trims of the new X3 means BMW’s best-seller has gone soft and abandoned its sporty roots in favor of compliant efficiency. While the economy is significantly improved as a result (the 30 xDrive gets 27/33/29 mpg city/highway/combined), its added hybrid technology also makes for better performance and more power across the board.

For the North American market, BMW offers the 2025 X3 with two different powertrains – for now, at least. The standard motor is a turbocharged four-cylinder and the more powerful alternative option is a turbocharged straight-six. While the B48 and B58 power plants may be familiar to BMW loyalists, they have both been improved for the new model year.

48-volt hybrid battery tech means the X3’s engines are more powerful

The BMW X3’s North American base offering for 2025 is a twin-scroll turbocharged 2.0L B48 mild-hybrid straight-four which produces 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque in the X3 30 xDrive model. While that’s only an increase of seven horsepower from its predecessor, its torque has been improved by 37 lb-ft, which makes for vastly enhanced low-range shove.

If it’s serious performance you’re after, the X3 M50 xDrive is certainly the more exciting option. Powered by a twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0L B58 straight-six that is also paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid battery system, the M50 packs a 393 horsepower, 428 lb-ft of torque, punch. With a modest increase of eleven horsepower over its predecessor, it’s the low end that’s most improved here as well, seeing an increase of 59 lb-ft of torque over the outgoing X3 M40i xDrive.

Both powertrain options are mated to the trusty ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission. Power is sent to all four wheels through BMW’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system, which offers confidence-inspiring traction for year-round driving conditions, but retains BMW’s signature rear-wheel bias that allows for playful handling dynamics.

Despite the heavily improved torque figures, the 2025 BMW X3 does carry some added bulk compared to its predecessor. Weighing in at 4,534 pounds, the new X3 is almost 150 pounds heavier than the outgoing generation. Although the X3 has gained some love handles, we’re at least glad it hasn’t let itself go as much as the new G90 M5 has, which weighs an astronomical 1,153 pounds more than its last generation.

The 2025 BMW X3 blends everyday practicality with exciting athleticism

BMW’s fabulous Adaptive M Suspension comes standard on the M50 xDrive and as an optional extra on the 30 xDrive, meaning that no matter how much power your X3 makes, a truly athletic driving experience is available for all the owners out there who like to take the long, twisty route home once in a while.

The 2025 BMW X3 presents itself as a compelling alternative to premium sport sedan offerings like the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class for those who need extra space, higher ground clearance, and the confidence of standard all-wheel drive.

It gains much in terms of capability and usability but doesn’t sacrifice much in terms of performance and agility. Of course, its increased ride height means it won’t be quite as competitive as those sedans around the corners, but it’s a worthy trade-off for a superior daily driver experience.
